In recent years, Ninghe has made remarkable achievements in ecological restoration, formulating the Qilihai Wetland Ecological Protection and Restoration Plan (2017-2025), and investing more than 10 billion yuan (about $1.4 billion) to promote its "top ten projects", including water source regulation and storage, bird protection, and a buffer zone ecological restoration. According to Han Baoliang, deputy director of the Qilihai Wetland Protection Center, this year, Ninghe has accelerated the formulation of its ecological evaluation index system and industry standards, which will support informatization, monitoring and management, and contribute to the more accurate, scientific and comprehensive protection and restoration of wetlands. This is also the first monitoring indicator system used for a single protected area in China.
At present, the biodiversity of Qilihai Wetlands has already increased. The number of bird species has increased from 182 ten years ago to 258, and the number of birds staying in Ninghe each year has also increased from 200,000 to nearly 500,000. The continuous increase of migratory birds demonstrates the achievements of Ninghe in ecological protection.

Furthermore, the local government has also promoted the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries and continues to promote environmental protection upgrading projects in major industrial parks. Since 2019, local enterprises have invested nearly 1.8 billion yuan in environmental protection governance and implemented more than 70 environmental protection projects.
As of December 5, the annual concentration of PM2.5 was 35.26 μ g/m ³ in Ninghe, with a year-on-year improvement of 7.9%, ranking second in Tianjin, and the number of days of good air quality throughout the year was 244.
